Getting there

Ropeway

The most common approach involves taking the Zao Chuo Ropeway from Zao Onsen to 鳥兜駅 (Torikabuto Station). From there, well-maintained trails lead to the summit in approximately 30 minutes. A one-way ticket on the ropeway costs around ¥900, and a round-trip ticket is approximately ¥1600. Check the ropeway's operating schedule, as it may vary depending on the season.

Hiking

For a more challenging ascent, hike from the Zao Onsen Ski Resort area. Follow the signs towards 鳥兜山. The trail is steep in sections and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit. This option is free, but requires a good level of fitness and appropriate hiking gear.

Overview

Mount Torikabuto, standing at 1387 meters within the Zao Mountain Range, is named for its resemblance to a phoenix helmet. The summit provides stunning panoramic views, including the Zao Onsen town below and, on clear days, distant peaks like Mt. Gassan, Mt. Asahi, and the Iide and Azuma mountain ranges.The summit area features the Zao Daikokuten shrine, dedicated to safe travels, family well-being, and business prosperity. The shrine's annual festival is held every October 5th.Several trails lead to the summit, catering to different skill levels. A popular option is a scenic loop from the Torikabuto Ropeway station, passing by the Dokko, Utsubo, and Katakai ponds. Another route begins at the Zao Onsen Ski Resort, offering a more challenging hike. In winter, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, though hiking is generally limited. The Zao Onsen Ski Resort is close by, offering skiing and snowboarding opportunities.
